Introduction to the Unified Profile for DoDAF and MODAF (UPDM) Modeling to Produce Fit for Purpose Architectures

Course #: 21-0222
Duration: 1 Day

The DoD and MOD organizations responsible for their respective architecture frameworks have been working toward a single definition. This work has progressed to the point where there is now a significant core of similar models which have been captured in the UPDM. This profile can be applied to UML modeling tools that implement both UML and SysML. This course explores the use of UPDM to produce DoDAF 2 compliant models and views.

Student exercises are used throughout the course to support the learning activities. The exercises can be based on the Search and Rescue example in the UPDM specification or based on a real-world project provided by the organization being trained.

  • The UML concepts that are extended to create DoDAF views
  • How the DM2 is mapped to the UPDM
  • Using UPDM to create DoDAF models
  • Using UPDM to create integrated architectures
  • Extending UPDM to create Fit for Purpose views

Course Outline (Modules and Topics)

  • UPDM Overview – discussion of the DISA requirements for the use of UPDM, the UPDM compliance levels, and the role of SysML and SoaML in UPDM.
  • The All Views in UPDM – Creating the AV-1 and producing the AV-2 from a project or program model.
  • The Capability Views – the purpose and development of the CV-1
  • The Operational Views – the purpose and development of the OV-1, OV-5, OV-4, OV-6a, OV-6b, and OV-6c
  • The Service Views – description of the service views and building the SOV-4
  • Relating OVs and SvcVs to CVs – understanding the OV-3 and creating the CV-5, CV-6, and CV-7
  •  The System Views – creating the SV-5, SV-3, SOV-3a, SV-4, SV-1 and SV-2
  •  The Data and Information Views – creating the DIV-1, DIV-2 and DIV-3
  • The Standards Viewpoint – creating models for the Std-V1 and Std-V2
  • The Project Viewpoint – modeling PV-1, PV-2, and PV-3 and how they are related to traditional project management tools
  • Architecture Descriptions – generating the necessary architectural views based on DoDAF 2 viewpoints
